ABU DHABI: The annual Caltex RoadStar Contest, the first of two for the
current year, organized by the Emirates Motor Sports Federation (EMSF)
made its debut in the National Capital, Abu Dhabi, today (May 21) where
12 drivers who drove off with cash awards, gifts and a certificate for
adhering to the basic road rules and regulations while negotiating
traffic during the peak morning hours.
The over decade old campaign to promote safe driving was held for the
first time in Abu Dhabi following a two-day campaign in Dubai on May
18-19.
EMSF Director General Mr. Khalid Al Malik said the very fact that Abu
Dhabi has been added to the campaign signifies the seriousness with
which road safety must be taken, and vowed to expand the campaign if
need be to other emirates in the future.
In this regard, Mr. Malik thanked RoadStar sponsors for their continued
commitment to corporate social responsibility and expressed the hope
that others would join the cause in extending this campaign to all the
remaining emirates of the country.
Held in the National Capital in co-operation with Abu Dhabi Police, the
contest is in its 11th year since its inception and has invested over
two million dirhams thus far in a campaign aimed at promoting safe
driving where drivers who observe basic principles of good driving such
as wearing seatbelts, using child safety seats, using indicators and
hands-free mobiles, observe lane discipline and display courtesy in
addition to adhering to speed limits come under the organizers’ scanner
during the campaign.
EMSF Director of Marketing and Business Development Roshanara Sait
patrolled the roads of Abu Dhabi during the peak morning hours in a
Lexus, courtesy Al Futtaim Motors, along with representatives of
sponsors Caltex, AXA Insurance, the International Automobile Touring
Club and media partners Gulf News, Wheels and Radio2.
A similar exercise will be undertaken tomorrow (May 22) from 10am onwards.
Besides being rewarded with a cash award of 750 dirhams on the spot,
gifts and a certificate endorsed by Abu Dhabi Police, the campaign also
aims to contribute to making a difference to lives of the many winners,
who most often send the reward money back home to support their
families.
Following were the winners in Dubai on Day 1: Shia GH Gul, Dawn Labis,
Leslie Ann Zaher, Cheraya Majeeda, Joelle El Kurdi, Hussain Al Ghasli,
Bacel El Khoury, Imran A. Ali, Debbie Heweitt, Kallum Yahutty, Rashid
Ali Ibrahim and Alastair Scott.
