DUBAI: Sheikh Abdulla Al Qassimi and co-driver Wael Marjan drove off with the prestigious Abu Dhabi Rally title in a time of 47 minutes 50 seconds on Saturday (April 19).

The 323-km Abu Dhabi Rally, Round 4 of the National Championship and Round 2 in the Saloon Class, was held under the Patronage of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces HH General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and organized by the Emirates Motor Sports Federation (EMSF).

A presentation ceremony was held at the finish ramp in front of the Marina Mall following which trophies were officially handed over during the awards dinner held at the Hilton Abu Dhabi by EMSF Vice Chairman Hamad Al Mazrouei in the presence of Organizing Committee Chairman Tariq Al Warshaw, Marketing and Business Development Director Roshanara Sait and other dignitaries.

The podium toppers finished in front of Yahya Al Amri and co-driver Ali Mirza who clocked a time of 48 minutes 31 seconds. In third place came Simon Nutter, navigated by Patrick McMurren, in a time of 51 minutes 04 seconds.

On Friday, Sheikh Abdulla topped the podium in the Prologue Stage clocking 1 minute and 13 seconds on the specially built 1.8-km track for the purpose.

The event, held next to Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi, gave spectators the opportunity to witness at close range top drivers in action and was important for competitors as this stage determined the grid positions for the main race the following day, tomorrow.

The second and third places in the Prologue Stage were clinched by Yahya (1.15) and David Mabbs, who unfortunately was unable to complete the rally after he rolled over during stage one on Saturday..

Sheikh Abdulla, who finished second to his brother Sheikh Khalid last year in Abu Dhabi, now leads the Saloon Class of the National Rally Championship having collected 20 points with a win here in Abu Dhabi and in Sharjah earlier this year on April 22-23.

There were a total of seven special stages, including the Prologue, and eight road sections that covered a total distance of 323 kilometers.

The six-round championship now resumes after the summer break later this year in September.
