DUBAI: The new racing season got off to a promising start with eight new drivers taking to the track in the UAE Karting Championship’s first round organized by the Emirates Motor Sports Federation at the Kartdrome on Friday (September7) with the prospect of many more joining the race for the coveted trophy looking bright as the championship progresses into the cooler months.

Friday saw 31 competitors in four classes taking advantage of the absence of some of their fellow competitors from the last season owing to rising temperatures despite the fact that the first race was held under lights from 5pm onwards.

Five new competitors registered for the championship in the Cadets Class with last season’s winner Elliott Patrick shifting to the Max Junior Class, some thing he wanted to do for a while now. However, Cadet runner-up in the last season Riccardo Curatola is back in the company of Thomas Bale and Leela EcElroy and is expected to push hard for an overall first this season.

On Friday, Curatola topped the podium with 120 points, just three short of the full points for the day, followed by newcomer Patrick Schoeller finishing a creditable second with Bale completing the podium.

Apart from Patrick, Joe Morrit too has moved to Max Junior this year after having competed in the Cadets Class last season. The two seasoned drivers are likely to be given a run for their money by veteran colleagues Edward Jones and Grace Brownlee who secured second and third overall in this class last season.

In the first round on Friday, Elliott began his campaign in the Max Junior Class with a second-place finish with Brownlee in third while Morritt topped the podium with a spectacular display collecting all 123 points available on the day.

Most drivers in the TAG Class (Light and Heavy) who have returned this season for another shot at the championship have been joined by three debutants with expectations of a higher level of competition this season.

The 11-round UAE Karting Championship 2007-08 is being held under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Marwan Bin Rashid Al Mualla and organized by the Emirates Motor Sports Federation at the Kartdrome.
