Al Ain Sportplex to host AutoX R4 Sunday
DRIVERS
will go into top gear when the fourth round of the UAE Autocross
Championship 2008, organized by the Emirates Motor Sports Federation,
takes off at the Al Ain Sportplex in Al Ain on December 2, the UAE’s
36th National Day.
The championship is being held under the Patronage of HH Sheikh Marwan Bin Rashid Al Mualla.
Though autox championship rounds are traditionally held on Fridays, the
current fourth round is being held on Sunday, December 2, the UAE’s
36th National Day, in order to provide competitors and spectators a
high-adrenaline, fun-filled day out to coincide with this momentous day
in the history of the UAE.
Moreover, the choice of Al Ain Sportplex is also seen as apt given its
proximity to the National Capital Abu Dhabi, not to mention the fact
that this once little-known complex is growing fast in terms of
popularity.
The Al Ain Sportplex was at the center of world attention when it
played host to the Rotax Max World Finals from November 26-December 1.
Al Ain Sportplex General Manager Mohammed Darmaki said holding this
round was a challenge he relishes given that it comes close on the
heels of an exhaustive one-week of the Max finals but takes pride in
the fact that the Sportplex will be host to the event on the country’s
National Day.
Over 30 drivers will race against time and machine in their quest to
top their respective classes and the overall title which will be
decided in the 10-round format ending in April next year.
Going into this round, two-time overall champion Waleed Afani is
expected to push his car to limit to extend his slender lead over Alan
Nawal who trails him by just one point while the vastly improving Fadi
Bikawi (Depa Group) is not far behind with just five points separating
him and the pack leader.
